Linda had a big, grand dream like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who fought against discrimination against African Americans. Linda was to achieve great success in her career in spite of adversity, despite being a woman. Even if she had to act like a slave in a shady HR department at the moment, Linda should deserve it. She must demonstrate her true worth and earn her accolades. And to achieve the goal, she must thoroughly eliminate anyone who stands in her way.
Since childhood, Linda’s mother had always loved her younger brother, who was three years younger than her. When Linda was born, she was the center of everyone’s attention. However, when her younger brother was born three years later, the situation changed drastically. Her parents’ attention was drawn to Linda’s younger brother, simply because he was a boy. Biting her lip and enduring the pain, Linda learned a useful skill. To lie to people and to trick them. To pretend to be conscientious and secretly report to her parents the terrible things her brother was doing. Even if there was no wrongdoing in his part, she would make up a plausible incident and blame it on her brother. This way, the parents would be disappointed in the small boy and thank Linda for telling them the truth, acknowledging finally her true value. And Linda would gain the lost accolades back from her parents. Given that the parents’ love and assets were finite, Linda had no choice but to fight for what had been taken from her. What was taken from Linda, she must fight to get back in so called “Jihad.”

This strategy lived on in Linda ever since. At a company where she arrived, she had to first determine who her competition was. Other female employees were the first one on the target list, especially non-Germans. Any foreign women must not be tolerated. Crucially, women praised and noticed by male employees must be eliminated as soon as possible; her sacred territory would be invaded by those women. The fact that men praised another woman made Lina furious. That was nothing other an insult to Linda. It couldn’t be that another woman was better than Linda. She would never allow such an insult and an evil attempt to undermine Linda’s status. Driven by jealousy and selfish ambition, Linda never missed an opportunity to eliminate other good women in the company, by lies and manipulation. “Good women” here mean women who are competent at her job, powerful and admired, and has leadership qualities – all positive characters in HR sense. All of these were dangerous signals in Linda’s eyes. If there was such a woman, Linda made sure to remember her name. It’s important task as an HR person: Toxic women in the business sector must always be ruled out.

A few years ago, a French woman was promoted but for some reason got fired before even arriving at the European headquarters in Switzerland, where Linda was located. She was supposed to be promoted to director of the Aftersales department and moved to the Swiss office, but family reasons delayed her move from France to Switzerland. And eventually her contract was terminated. She was supposed to have been promoted, but was fired in the blink of an eye. People who knew her wondered what happened, but nobody knew the truth.
It was a piece of cake, Linda thought. It was very easy to make it happen. The key word was mutual distrust. That was Linda’s specialty. The French woman, Amelie, had been hesitating to move to Switzerland because of her young child in France. She wanted to come to Switzerland half of the time, while waiting for things to be on track. Rather than starting with a 100% Swiss-based work contract, would it be possible to have hours split between Switzerland and France 50-50. When Amelie asked Linda whether there would be a solution by HR arrangement, Linda was determined not to miss this wonderful opportunity (… to be continued.)
